Michael Loynd

RGN BSc

Clinical Research Treatment Nurse

My research work focuses on long term condition management of both physical and mental health. Specifically diabetes and depression treatment, delivered to patients in the primary care setting.

Depression is twice as common in people with diabetes and is associated with poor blood glucose control, decreased motivation to participate in physical and social activities, increased diabetes related complications, higher associated health service use, and poor quality of life.

I am working as part of a team looking at developing an intervention that integrates the care of diabetes and coexisting depression. This work is important to identify the effectiveness of an integrated approach to the treatment of diabetes and depression. The current pilot study work will also help in assessing the feasibility of a larger study in this area in the future.

I have previous experience working with the Psychological Medicine team on large Cancer Research UK trials focusing on the treatment of depression in patients with cancer.
