Therapy-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy in a cat - Laboratory findings, diagnostic imaging and histopathological examination showed more than one possible aetiology

We describe a case of a two-year-old, male European Shorthair cat with temporal lobe epilepsy that was therapy-resistant and in which several aetiological factors may have had a role. The cat was referred because of acute episodes of behavioural changes, salivation, and focal and generalized epileptic seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a bilateral signal increase in the hippocampus in T2-weighted images. The seizures were resistant to antiepileptic treatment. A control MRI scan made five months after the first presentation showed volume reduction in the hippocampus. Histopathological examination of the brain showed bilateral hippocampal sclerosis and concurrent structural alterations of the dentate gyrus. To the best of our knowledge this is the first longitudinal MRI study of a cat with suspected hippocampal atrophy and therapy-resistant epilepsy.
