Plant science makes use of NMR techniques that range from the simplest form of spectroscopy through to the most advanced imaging experiments. Applications include the structural elucidation of metabolites and macromolecules of plant origin; analysis of the metabolites, pathways, and fluxes that make up the plant metabolic network; and anatomical and physiological measurements based on the detection of tissue water signals. The scope of the field is outlined, including comments on the plant-specific experimental arrangements that are necessary for in vivo work on plants, and the biochemical and physiological significance of the NMR data for research in plant science is emphasized.
