Robert MacLaren, Professor of Ophthalmology in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences and Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Oxford Eye Hospital has won a 2013 Pfizer Ophthalmics Carl Camras Translational Research Award. Presented by the AVRO Vision Foundation these prestigious international awards are made annually to researchers under 45 who have exhibited excellence in research, fundamental scientific discoveries, concepts and novel technologies likely to lead to clinical benefits.
Robert was recognized for is pioneering research into novel treatments for retinal degeneration. His clinical and clinically relevant research achievements include successful mammalian optic nerve regeneration; first UK retinal transplantation trial for macular degeneration; his 2006 Nature paper showing retinal repair by transplantation of photoreceptor precursors is one of the journals top-10 downloads; and he was named one of the Medical Research Council’s leading scientists. He has recently successfully initiated, as chief investigator, the world’s first multicentre retinal gene therapy trial for choroideraemia.
