Understanding the nature and origins of learning and development

Researchers in Oxford are looking at the cognitive and neural mechanisms underpinning the development of speech, language, literacy, numeracy, attention, and executive function, and how these are affected in developmental disorders. They are using diverse approaches, including behavioural experiments, computational modelling, imaging, genetics, longitudinal studies, and interventions. The Oxford Centre for Developmental Science unites researchers working in these domains around key facilities (e.g. infant eye tracking and EEG). 

Other teams focus on child psychiatry, investigating the interplay of risk and resilience factors alongside prevention and treatment of childhood disorders. Key research highlights include positive results from large-scale trials of classroom interventions for poor readers, demonstrating that underlying similarities exist between conditions traditionally regarded as distinct (e.g. dyslexia and autism); and showing how maternal depression affects infant development.
