© International Rice Research Institute 2008. This paper reviews the identification and functional characterization of GLK genes in diverse plant species. In so doing, a hypothesis is proposed to suggest how GLK gene function differs in C3 and C4 species. Finally, suggestions are made about how this research and other genetic strategies could be used to produce C4 rice.
