C-type cytochromes have haem covalently attached via one or more pairs of thioether bonds, generated by reaction of haem vinyl groups with thiols of cysteines in CXXCH motifs. Specificity and stereochemistry of attachment is invariant but there are several distinct post-translational systems responsible. Which one of the systems used by bacteria and mitochondria depends on the cell type © 2011 The Author Journal compilation © 2011 FEBS.
