The official opening of the Jeffrey Gray Behavioural Neuroscience Centre was held on Friday 21st June, attended by over 100 members of the University and invited guests. The new interdisciplinary research centre benefits from state of the art behavioural laboratory facilities funded by the Wellcome Trust. The Centre, led by Professor David Bannerman, is managed by the Department of Experimental Psychology with significant collaboration and involvement from; The Departments of Physiology Anatomy and Genetics, Pharmacology, Psychiatry, the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics and the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences.
The centre takes its name from the late Professor Jeffrey Gray, who was instrumental in establishing Oxford as a leader in research into rodent behaviour. No fewer than three generations of his family attended the official opening. The event was introduced by Prof Bannerman followed by a biographical account of Jeffrey Gray’s academic work and his many other abilities delivered by Prof Nick Rawlins, who was a former student of Prof Gray. The remainder of the day featured a range of talks from Principal Investigators reflecting the breadth and diversity of the centre’s research. The plenary lecture ‘Inhibition, activation and neuromodulation’ was given by Professor Peter Dayan, Head of the Gatsby Computational Neuroscience Unit at UCL. The event concluded with a poster session at which junior members of the centre benefited from the opportunity of showcasing their research work.
