Pyrolysis mass spectral characterization of wood from cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) deficient pine was reported. A different pool of precursors for lignin production was noticed for extremely low level of CAD enzyme activity in mutant loblolly pine trees. An increase in levels of dihydroconiferyl alcohol was noticed on characterization of CAD-deficient wood by pyrolysis mass spectroscopy. The plasticity in biosynthesis of lignin was confirmed.
