We describe the compilation of a panel of 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci suitable for inference of parentage and relatedness in the cooperatively breeding meerkat (Suricata suricatta). First, three of 70 microsatellite primer pairs characterized from other carnivores, specifically cat (Felix catta), dog (Canis familiaris) and grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) revealed polymorphic microsatellites in meerkats. Second, a further nine loci were isolated from meerkats by screening a plasmid library with a32P-labelled (CA)15probe.
