The phase-sensitive NOESY experiment is combined with the 1331 solvent suppression pulse sequence to observe hydrogen exchange in water. A simple analysis of the 2D peak intensities yields quantitative values of the rate constants without the need for fitting procedures. The method is illustrated by a study of the polypeptide viomycin and the application of this method to the study of proteins is discussed. © 1986.
