Study options in Neuroscience

Wellcome Trust Doctoral Programme in Neuroscience

This is a 1+3 year programme. Students take the one year MSc in Neuroscience in the first year and then proceed to  a 3 year DPhil in Neuroscience in any area of Neuroscience within the Oxford network of laboratories and approved supervisors. There are FIVE Wellcome Trust awards each year. These awards cover fees and a generous stipend for four years. For the doctoral project the award also provides research expenses.

All applications must be received by the January 6th 2012 deadline

MSc in Neuroscience

Sympathetic neuronsThe MSc is a full one-year course (from the end of September to mid September the following year), carried out within the Division of Medical Sciences, which provides a broad interdisciplinary training in Neuroscience. Students must study within the three main branches (molecular, cellular and systems), learning both theory and practical research techniques. Applicants with a strong scientific background, but not necessarily in Neuroscience, are encouraged to apply.

There are approximately 20 places available on this course. Students on this programme have been successful in obtaining a variety of scholarships.

All applications must be received by the January 6th 2012 deadline.

Candidates who are not successful with their application for the Wellcome Trust 4 year Doctoral Programme in Neuroscience will be considered for the MSc in Neuroscience, unless they clearly express a wish NOT to be considered for the MSc in Neuroscience in their personal statement.

3 year DPhil in one of the departments in Oxford

All departments that undertake Neuroscience research offer the opportunity to register for a doctoral research project, DPhil. If you wish to be considered for entry to a 3 year DPhil, either in addition, or as an alternative, to the MSc or Wellcome Trust programme, you must apply directly to the Department of interest indicating which supervisor you wish to work with. Separate applications must be made for the 3 year DPhil and Wellcome Trust 4 year Doctoral programmes.

All applications registered by January 6th 2012 are eligible to be considered for University and departmental funding awards.

Application guidelines

We prefer online applications. Before completing the application form you should read carefully the Notes for Guidance Applications, clearly indicating the course(s) of interest, and should include a completed University of Oxford application. There is no need to complete the section on Study Plans/Research Proposal but  you should write a statement, of no more than 1000 words, on why you want to do the course.   You also need to include your CV and academic transcripts. You will also require three references. With paper applications, whilst it is preferable that the referees send their letters to you so that a completed application may be submitted, we realise that this is not always possible. In the latter case, referees should be asked to send their references, in confidence, directly to the Graduate Admissions Office, University of Oxford, Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JD. This is the same address to which you should send completed paper applications. It is essential that the references are received before the closing date for applications.
